19) BEDFORD HOUSE
Walking down St. Mary's Street you come to BEDFORD HOUSE . This
was the headquarters of the Bedford Level Corporation 1844-1864, responsible
for fenland drainage. The coat of arms of the corporation is still above
the door, depicting a man with a spade and another with a scythe with the
motto underneath ARRIDET ARRIDUM. Translated this means Dryness Pleaseth.
