4th may
I write this, dozing languidly at the poolside
of morfo apartments, skiathos, and in your wildest dreams you cannot
imagine how smug that makes me feel. Tiny droplets of condensation
race each other down the frosted surface of a cold beer. a savoury
something is browning nicely somewhere, and the gentle undulations
of the pool's surface beckon irresistably. so irresistably, that i
felt compelled to throw the wife in to appease them...
But enough about me .. let's talk about you
for a minute.
If you were one of the sodden faithful that braved the elements at
the Cloisters last thursday, and nearly a hundred of you did, you
would have bore witness to a typically storming set from local rockers
Duvet as the Ely
Feast fundraisers kicked off at Pure. Iwon't keep
banging on about the Feast.. if it
happens, it happens, and if it doesn't happen this year then one thing
it will have achieved will have been to provide a platform for a regular
live music venue in the city.
It being a first night, Iwas a little more apprehensive than i might
have been and our earlier concerns with the house p.a. seemed half
justified when, combined with occasions of inept mixing, it didn't
seem like it could cope with Duvet's
uncompromising backline.
However, the band met the task head on and delivered a thoroughly
professional set with many highlights - my own favourite being their
encore rendition of the Pistols' God Save The Queen - an ironic choice
for me: this anti-establishment rant made its first appearance at
the at the silver jubilee in 1977. maybe Pat was winding me up but
here we are, twenty five years on, falling over ourselves to provide
for a golden jubilee celebration packed with history, pageantry and
dignitaries, but mention Ely Feast
to anyone within nutholt lane and witness a retreat akin to napoleon's
from wigan, yellow smiles hanging in the air.. oops, there i go again.
so.. a satisfactory first night, my only real surprise was that the
audience seemed a little subdued.. Perhaps they were being polite.
they were certainly polite enough to stump up
fifty quid for the Lily House Residentilal Home, and our thanks
to them for that.
real numbers up next. i've not seen these
guys since they slimmed down to a three piece but if the live show
matches the cd they cetainly haven't suffered by it.
May 16th or this Thursday..!
See you down the front. dancing. with my pom pom slippers. lifting
tables with my teeth. and if you're really good, i'll show you my
holiday snaps. i've some good ones of aircraft...
