be glad when it's over...
weeks of anticipation, pontification and frustration punctuated
by brief seconds of exhilaration, jubilation, celebration, ululation
- i'm on a roll here - intoxication, unification, peterborough railway
station... ok. perhaps not the last two.
by the time you read this we shall be staring
the final Feast benefit gig in the face. as yet, no other dates have
been scheduled and it seems to be an appropriate moment to reflect.
your parting's not straight, for a start, ha ha.
the pure gigs were set up to satisfy several criteria, and in many
of these aspects i feel they have been successful. one of these was
to raise funds for the Ely Feast, previously
the Lammas Festival. the Feast is still stalled in incubation
while the organisers await the nod from the great and good regarding
our intention to make a fraction of the noise that emanated from cherry
tree hill a couple of weeks ago. ely's jubilee celebrations are excellently
summarised elsewhere and i will merely doff my cap to what was a wonderful
weekend of festivities. i will happily embrace anything that brings
live music to the centre of ely and in that alone the jubilee certainly
delivered. like yourselves, i expect, i can hardly wait for the next
one. which is probably just as well.
fundraising has been slow and steady, rather than spectacular. the
most recent recipients of a share of your three quids are the friends
of the princess of wales hospital, to
the tune of forty notes. you may allow yourselves a modest preen.
the fundraising has been much assisted by the bands willingness to
perform for a fraction of what a live act should reasonably expect
for a show and DUVET, REALNUMBERS, JEFF &
MUSHROOM SHED are to be loudly applauded for their generosity
and public-spiritedness [ouch!]. between you, me and them - not necessarily
in that order - we have laid the foundation that can sustain something
worthwhile. and had a damn' good time doing
so.
what i loved about mushroom shed
was their obvious sheer enjoyment of performing and of playing together.
this band showed an energy and exhuberance that is not always fashionable
among musicians. good for them,
i look forward to catching up with them again soon. [possibly at
the man on
the moon, in cambridge, supporting jeff - july 6th].
looking not quite so far forward, we expect jon
beedle's electric boogie band to land in the car park on
27th june. jon is a veteran who has worshipped at the same
musical shrine as myself but, where i came away a little deaf, jon
became endowed with more virtuoso guitar skills that is surely illegal.
this kind of plank spanking is exciting enough to appeal to music
fans of all generations, and particularly to - how do you put this
delicately? - the more mature enthusiast. i suppose, if you're considering
bringing your mums to this gig, we could raise the issue of concessions
on the door. o.a.p's for two quid? why
not? we had a gran in last night and she gave me one of the best ideas
i've received since we started these sessions.
she said if we shifted the tables, people might dance. Brilliant!
the tables must go. maybe someone will dance with me. let's hope it's
not too late and if it is, there's always...
