Fil's Frobbin' "LOCAL ROCK" Column
covering Local Music & Musicans

"Fil's Throbbing Column" looks good on paper but, in reality, Ely's "live music scene" is a serious business. The phrase itself is something of a misnomer, given the paucity of the subject and the short, and lazy, answer is - there isn't one.

good to see the one hundred acre festival in the news...
this is a weekend bash taking place near longstanton and i for one hope to be dropping in, if only to take notes...
i've spent the week driving around the county and festival, carnival, fete and feast notices are springing up faster than housing estates on the a10. the hundred acre festival is a new event, however, and the thirty quid asking price for a ticket is a very reasonable figure judging by today's prices. i wish them all the luck going for this new and welcome enterprise. this past fortnight alone has featured the wilburton beer festival, a national chopper club bash at quy, buntingford carnival and a weekend bash at soham, and these are just the shows that i've been handed fliers for, all featuring live music. hurrah... maybe there just isn't the room to squeeze in a little free festival in the city. ely city, that is.

whatever. we're still in there, batting away. once more into the breach. ely feast supporters will be as delighted as we were to hear that the official bods have finally given us written authority to hold the feast on willow walk/lavender's land/field/wherever. that gives us six weeks of preparation and planning, admittedly the bulk of which has been done already, but the necessary licences and insurances need to be submitted in good time and i fear that time may have passed. expect further news in a few days.

pure fundraising gigs ground to a close last night.
the bit in the middle, again occupied by sir michael of gilletshire and his lovely associate, al, evers Pal, was thoroughly entertaining and a nice contast from the main attraction - the jon beedle electric boogie band. jon treated a paltry fifty punters [50 punters = 50 quid raised for aquarius, a local charity for disabled adults = pat on collective head] to a blistering hour and a half's rock. jon falls easily into the guitar hero category with dave's drums and pete wilsher's bass providing a platform you can land a jumbo on. that's not to say the night was [this week's joke coming up] plane sailing. the second set was plagued with problems, jon's amplifier in particular, but these guys are seasoned pros and even if their own attack is malfunctioning they still have enough to beat off allcomers going full steam ahead. some of the set was breathtaking, and the half hundred in attendance left well satisfied.

the "classic rock" theme gave us the chance to dust off some scratchy old l.p's., including my own copy of "who's next". ironic, in that i woke this morning to learn that john entwhistle had died in las vegas. john played bass in a band who famously hoped they'd die before they got old, which only goes to show what dreadful liars musicians are. fifty seven was way too young for john, his family, and his friends. i shall be giving "my generation" a wistful spin or two over the weekend.

looking to the future, sixties night at pure looms large on the horizon. we will be welcoming back realnumbers, the first band of these sessions to make a return appearance. having personally checked them out last weekend i can confirm that the boys are in fine shape and i look forward to seeing them at the club on 11th july.

i'll see you both there...

June 13th "Mushroom Shed"
June 20th "John Beedle's Electric Boogie Band"

As well as fundraising for the Ely Feast it is intended that local groups and charities will benefit from these dates. funds raised from the first date will be split between The Feast and the Lily House Residential Home in Ely. funds from the second date will go towards The Feast and Highfields School.

I will forward further details, band biogs. etc as the dates approach. may i add that the first ely quiz night was a resounding success, £300 being raised. The St Patrick's knees up in Stretham with Entertainment from "Cooking with Sticks", "Roddy Steele and Andy Ross" PLUS "Butchers Brew" was also very sucessful. Many thanks from the Ely Feast organisers to all those involved for their enthusiasm and to everybody who attended these Fund Raising events..
