Fil's Frobbin' "LOCAL ROCK" Column
covering Local Music & Musicans

"Fil's Throbbing Column" looks good on paper but, in reality, Ely's "live music scene" is a serious business. The phrase itself is something of a misnomer, given the paucity of the subject and the short, and lazy, answer is - there isn't one.

strange ...

steppenwolf was the first sound to greet me this morning, staggering through the kitchen and fumbling with the dial. i could tell you where i found it, but they never do us any favours so to hell with 'em. strange, because "born to be wild" was the song with which real "groovy" numbers brought their sixties set to a close at pure last night. was it possible that He had attended in person [something had certainly possessed dil] and had given us his blessing. have faith, children. yours is the way that is good and righteous. live music will flourish in ely. ps. relegation will not be a concern this season, and your tyres need a little air. doesn't your head do funny things when you're waking up. it's as if it has a mind of its own.

anyone attending the cloisters last night, divine or otherwise, picked the right night to appear. i have no hesitation in declaring it the best pure live gig so far. having billed the gig as a sixties night we sat back and awaited a horde of wrinklies with bus passes and invalid carriages. what we got was a contingent of predominantly female teenagers. i've never seen so much i.d. flashed in one evening. scratch the plans for a cloakroom and install skateboard parking facilities. what these kids were doing gathering on a sixities night, celebrating music that was popular not so much before they were born, but when their mums were very young indeed, is beyond me. but we were glad they were there, and hope they were, too

groovy numbers were certainly glad of it - delivering a bludgeoning set that welded sixties pop standards to nineties rock technology, and so what if it wasn't authentic. you were expecting psychedelic volkswagens and lambretta scooters? groovy numbers claim to be east anglia's hottest covers band and few of last night's crowd would argue with that. nice to hear guitarist anil's vocals well up in the mix, too. and did you notice how i casually slipped the word "crowd" into that sentence. yesterday's gig was the first in six dates where numbers got close to non libellous use of collective nouns.

and here i have to announce, with deep regret, that i observed several unseemly outbursts of spontaneous dancing at the club. this irregular and immoral practice can spread throughout the whole audience and can become very difficult to contain. towards the end of the evening i was disturbed to realise that i was the only person in the club to have remained seated. standards must be maintained, you know. i expect not to have to tell you again.

our regular duo of al me pal and sir michael of gilletshire again occupied the open mic spot, which is fast becoming their exclusive domain. in what was a very boisterous evening, al's sublime sax and earnest vocals provided the perfect foil to sir michael's thoughtful and sensitive strumming. students of the six string were treated to a rare exhibition of complex and challenging chord progressions unlikely to feature in any guitar manual..;-)

no pure now for four weeks. due to an administrative hitch, the next gig has been blown out, so look forward to friday, 8th august, when we host an evening of irish music and welcome mick's kitchen to waitrose car park.

Now off to ely folk weekend, driver, and don't spare the horses...

As well as fundraising for the Ely Feast it is intended that local groups and charities will benefit from these dates. funds raised from the first date will be split between The Feast and the Lily House Residential Home in Ely. funds from the second date will go towards The Feast and Highfields School.

I will forward further details, band biogs. etc as the dates approach. may i add that the first ely quiz night was a resounding success, £300 being raised. The St Patrick's knees up in Stretham with Entertainment from "Cooking with Sticks", "Roddy Steele and Andy Ross" PLUS "Butchers Brew" was also very sucessful. Many thanks from the Ely Feast organisers to all those involved for their enthusiasm and to everybody who attended these Fund Raising events..
