july
alas, poor tom
pure live 25th july plunged to a new nadir in
terms of mr and mrs j. public attending. of course, it doesn't
help when you announce two weeks previously that the next show has
been cancelled. local rockers duvet had been lined up for this date
but the deadline had expired without any confirmation and we had assumed
they would not be performing. it transpires that the boys have gone
their seperate ways, for reasons as yet unknown, and duvet are, sadly,
no more. whatever each individual's plans are for the future, we wish
them every success.
having opted for the night off we were then made an offer we couldn't
refuse in the lean and dashing frame of mr.
tom colborn. looking not unlike jarvis
cocker, tom arrived with a guitar in each hand [ie. two] to
deliver an accomplished set of blues guitar.
tom has been earning rave reviews in cambridge but, of course, what's
good for cambridge can mean diddly squat in ely and by the
time tom closed the show he was entertaining the open mic session
musicians, the door staff and the bar persons.
tom has a friday night club tent session at the cambridge
folk festival where his singing and guitar playing will generate
considerably more interest than they did at the cloisters last night.
the open mic session was again admirably fielded by al and michael
sir birthday with the surprise guest appearance of jeff's andy and
ian who obliged us with very credible acoustic stereophonics impersonations.
speaking of folk festivals - great to
see the ely folk weekend back with us. the weekend has been thoughtfully
and lovingly captured elsewhere on this site but it is worth remarking
upon what might be achieved when music enthusiasts and ruling bodies
pull in the same direction. the weekend was a roaring success and
a tribute to the imagination and hard work of those involved to whom
i take off my hat, shirt and trousers.
there is further evidence of music al fresco with
the appearance of the b4's on the market square this saturday at 11.30.
i understand that a series of gigs is
planned for ely town centre on saturday mornings throughout the summer.
if this is correct i, for one, will be delighted. evidence
that ely is shrugging off its lethargic attitude towards popular music
and making something happen is more than welcome, but before
the local live scene slips back into its more familiar coma i should
point out the prospect of an irish night on
the horizon...
...thursday august 8th at pure. oceans of diddly-diddly music anticipated
with the arrival of cambridgeshire trio mick's kitchen. proceeds to
mencap, and bring your own shillelagh. and if you can't tell a reel
from a jig, you can't come fishing with me.
