The primary purpose of Ely & District Volunteer Centre is to place potential volunteers with an interesting variety of suitable work. Voluntary work is encouraged as a worthwhile experience for volunteers, enabling them to contribute their skills. It is to be enjoyed and is sometimes a step to employment. Two projects of the Volunteer Centre are the Social Car Scheme and the Gardening & Decorating Scheme for persons who are in need for whatever reason.

Q: Ever thought of volunteering in your community but didn't know what to do or where to go?

A: READ ON...

You might work with people who have physical or mobility difficulties, a learning difficulty, or mental illness. Volunteers might also work with people who are sick, homeless, victims of crime, bereaved, drug or alcohol-dependent or who are prisoners or ex-offenders. We are currently looking for volunteer drivers and gardeners for the Social Car Scheme and Gardening Scheme.

Q: How much of my time will it take up?

A: As much or as little time as you can give e.g. once a week, month, a day or even a few hours, evenings or weekends, tailor it to fit into your life style.

Q: How much money will it cost me?...

A:Volunteers should never be out of pocket, all expenses incurred e.g. travel costs, should be paid for by the organisation.

Q: What can volunteering offer you?...

A:Volunteering can offer you the chance to learn new skills, use your existing skills and expertise, develop new interests, meet people, become active in bringing about social change and the opportunity to get involved. This is open to all, including those who are physically disabled or those with learning difficulties and those seeking
rehabilitation for whatever reason in the community.

Q: What does the Volunteer Centre do?...

A:Enables people to do voluntary work. Contacts local organisations who involve volunteers and collects information on these organisations and on the volunteering opportunities available.
The Centrex also work with these organisations to develop new volunteering opportunities.
Offers advice and placements for people who are interested in becoming volunteers.
Offers training and support to volunteer organisations who undertake voluntaiy work. (In this way Centrex try to ensure that volunteers are not discriminated against and that volunteers are supported in their voluntary activity).

Q: How can we help you?...

A:The Volunteer Centre can put you in touch with many types of community or voluntary organisations who involve volunteers, both local and national charities.
The range of volunteering opportunities is vast. For example volunteers may work with children, families, elderly people, teenagers or people in middle age.

Whatever you do you should enjoy yourself.
